Skin and cartilage tissue engineering: from bench to bedside
Agnes Klar
Deputy Head at the Tissue Biology Research Unit at the University Children’s Hospital Zurich, Switzerland
Agnes Klar, PhD, DSc obtained her Master’s degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Konstanz in 2009. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Zurich in 2014, where she later completed her habilitation in 2019. Since then, she has been leading a research group at the Tissue Biology Research Unit at the University Children’s Hospital Zurich.
Her expertise lies in skin tissue engineering, wound healing processes, and dermatological disease research. Her research focuses on the characterization and application of skin analogs utilizing stem cells derived from adipose tissue, which led to the development of the innovative denovoSkin™ preparation. This preparation, containing autologous keratinocytes and fibroblasts, successfully completed Phase II clinical trials for burn treatment and is now entering Phase III trials.
Additionally, Dr. Klar is conducting research on cartilage engineering, aimed at treating congenital defects in children, such as microtia and spina bifida.
