Title: Application of Raman Spectroscopy and Imaging to Biodegradable Polymers and Marine Plastics

Speaker: Prof. Yukihiro Ozaki, Kwansei Gakuin University, Japan

Abstract

The aim of Prof. Ozaki's presentation is to showcase the latest achievements in the field of Raman spectroscopy applications and to invite cooperation with his home institution, Kwansei Gakuin University. The seminar on 25 September is the first in a series of three presentations entitled Frontiers of Molecular Spectroscopy. The remaining presentations will take place at other FarU universities:

Biography

Professor Yukihiro Ozaki was born in Sakai, Osaka, Japan in 1949. Ozaki graduated from Osaka University in 1973 with B.S degree in chemistry (Faculty of Science). He also obtained his M.S (1975) and Ph.D. (1978) degrees in physical chemistry from the same university (Graduate School of Science). Since 1993, he was a professor in the Department of Chemistry, School of Science and Technology, Kwansei Gakuin University. He was a Vice President of Kwansei Gakuin University from 2013 to 2018. Currently, Ozaki is a professor emeritus and a university fellow, Kwansei Gakuin University, a guest professor, Kobe University, and a guest principal researcher of RIKEN. Professor Ozaki is the co-author of over 1,100 scientific publications, and his Hirsch index is 96.

Prof. Ozaki has long been involved in the studies of vibrational spectroscopy including Raman, infrared, and near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. He has been famous for the developments of instruments such as those of NIR imaging systems and ATR-far-ultraviolet (FUV) systems, spectroscopic analysis methods, and various applications like those to biomedical sciences. He has also been very active for FUV spectroscopy studies, from the development of instruments, spectra analysis, and applications.

Ozaki has been internationally very active in research and education of spectroscopy, physical chemistry, and analytical chemistry for the last four decades. He was a senior research fellow of Chemistry Department of Princeton University in 1993. He is a fellow of Society for Applied Spectroscopy (since 2010), Royal Society of Chemistry (since 2015), The Chemical Society of Japan (since 2016), and International Council of Near-infrared Spectroscopy (since 2017). Ozaki was also given Doctorate Honoris Causa from Jagiellonian University, Poland (2016) and from University of Wroclaw, Poland (2019). He became a foreign member of Polish Academy of Art and Sciences (2024).

Ozaki was an Associate Editor of Applied Spectroscopy and one of the Editors of Chemometrics and Intelligent Laboratory Systems, and currently, he is an associate Editor of Encyclopedia of Analytical Chemistry and a member of the editorial board of several journals including Journal of Raman Spectroscopy, Journal of Near-Infrared Spectroscopy. He was President of the Asian NIR Consortium (2007-2011) and President of Japanese Council for Near Infrared Spectroscopy (JCNIRS). (2007-2011).

Ozaki received many awards including the 1998 Tomas Hirschfeld Award, the 2001 EAS Award for Achievements in Near Infrared Spectroscopy, the Spectroscopical Society of Japan Award (2002), Science and Technology Award of Japanese Government, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (2005), Gerald Birth Award of International Conference Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy, the Japan Society for Analytical Chemistry (JSAC) Award (2008), MIT Dasari Lecture Award, USA (2011), Bomem-Michelson Award (2014). The Chemical Society of Japan Award (2017). The Medal with Purple Ribbon from Japanese Emperor (2018). Pittsburg Spectroscopy Award (2019). Charles Mann Award for Applied Raman Spectroscopy (2020). Karl Norris Award, International Council of Near-infrared Spectroscopy (2021). The Medal of Ioannes Marcus Marci, Ioannes Marcus Marci Spectroscopic Society (2022). He obtained China Government Friendship Award (2022). He received The Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon from Japanese Emperor (2023). Ellis R. Lippincott award (2025), Optica (The Optical Society of America), Society of Applied Spectroscopy, and Coblentz Society.
