The lipidOmics group focuses on the development and application of advanced lipidomic and bioanalytical workflows for the analysis of complex biological systems. Our research combines chromatography, mass spectrometry, and analytical method development to improve the understanding of lipid diversity and its biological significance.
Current research projects
1. Extracellular vesicle separation and lipidomics
We develop chromatographic strategies for the separation of extracellular vesicle subpopulations and investigate how their chromatographic behaviour relates to membrane composition and physicochemical properties.
A major focus is hydrophobic interaction chromatography (HIC), which enables the gentle fractionation of EV-enriched samples into populations displaying distinct lipidomic signatures. By integrating HIC with LC–MS lipidomics and orthogonal EV characterization, we investigate how lipid composition contributes to differences in vesicle surface properties and chromatographic retention.

2. Human milk lipidomics and early-life nutrition
We investigate the human milk lipidome as a dynamic molecular system that changes throughout lactation and differs between individuals.
We are particularly interested in identifying common and donor-specific lipid trajectories across lactation and understanding how milk lipid composition relates to maternal factors and early-life nutrition.

3. Biomedical and translational lipidomics
We apply lipidomics to biomedical questions in which molecular lipid composition may provide information about disease state, cellular phenotype or biological response.
We develop robust analytical pipelines for complex biological matrices including cells, milk, and other biofluids. Current applications include the investigation of EV-associated lipid signatures in oncology and other disease models.
