The place where passion, science, and business meet

The history of sciences about corrosion at Gdańsk University of Technology begins from the moment when teaching and research activities were resumed within its walls after the Second World War and is associated with the person of Professor Julian Kamecki, who in Gdańsk from 15.09.1945 organized the Chair of Physical Chemistry at the newly established Faculty of Chemistry, becoming its first head.
On 1.10.1945, Professor Stefan Minc began working at the Chair of Physical Chemistry of the Faculty of Chemistry of GUT. After Professor Julian Kamecki's departure to Krakow, Prof. S. Minc has been heading the Chair of Physical Chemistry since 17.01.1946. In corrosion research, he established close scientific cooperation with the industry of the Tri-city area – Gdańsk Shipyard, Gdańsk Sea Port and Gdynia Sea Port.In his research work, Prof. S. Minc dealt with electrochemical aspects of corrosion processes.
Professor Stefan Minc's PhD student was Professor Romuald Juchniewicz, who obtained his PhD degree on October 7, 1954. Prof. R. Juchniewicz was an employee of the Chair of Physical Chemistry, heading the Marine Corrosion Department. From 1969 to 1991, Prof. R. Juchniewicz headed the Department of Anti-Corrosion Protection Technology. In 1991, he became the head of the Chair of Anti-Corrosion Protection Technology, which he created himself, the only one in Poland.
In 1996, Professor Kazimierz Darowicki became the head of the Chair of Anti-Corrosion Protection Technology, a protégé of Prof. R. Juchniewicz. Due to the change in the profile of teaching and research activities of the Chair of Anti-Corrosion Protection Technology, in 1996 it obtained a new name: Chair of Electrochemistry, Corrosion and Materials Engineering.
In 2023, Electrochemistry, Corrosion and Materials Engineering 's head became Professor Juliusz Orlikowski , a protégé of Prof. K. Darowicki. As part of corrosion research, he establishes close scientific and technological cooperation with industrial partners
