prof. dr hab. inż. Włodzimierz Zwierzykowski | Faculty of Chemistry at the Gdańsk University of Technology

On 28 November 2022, at the age of 93, died Professor Włodzimierz Zwierzykowski, PhD, DSc, Eng. – long-term academic teacher at Gdańsk University of Technology, Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry in the years 1975 – 1978 and Vice-Rector of Gdańsk Tech in the years 1978 – 1981, head of the Department of Fat Technology in the years 1974 – 1999.

He was born on 25 April 1929 in Bydgoszcz. In 1950, after passing his matura exams, he enrolled at the Faculty of Chemistry of Gdańsk University of Technology, obtaining in 1954 an engineering diploma, and in 1956 a master's degree in chemical engineering. In 1962, he obtained a doctoral degree defending his doctoral dissertation supervised by Henryk Niewiadomski. In 1965 he obtained the academic degree of associate professor and in 1977 he received the academic title of professor.

He started his professional career in 1945 (February-August) working as a worker in the "Leo" shoe factory in Bydgoszcz. After obtaining the title of engineer (1954), he started working at the Faculty of Chemistry of Gdańsk University of Technology as an assistant at the Department of Organic Chemistry until 1956. In the years 1956-1969 he was a senior assistant, assistant professor, and since 1966 an associate professor at the Department of Fat Technology. In the following years (1969−1991) he was an assistant professor and associate professor at the Fat Technology Department of the Institute of Organic Chemistry, Technology and Nutrition, since 1974 he was the head of this Department, since 1977 - an associate professor. In the years 1991-1999 he was the head of the Fat Technology Department of the Faculty of Chemistry at Gdańsk Tech. He retired in 1999, working as a research professor.

He was a member of the scientific councils of the Institute of Surface Chemistry and Catalysis of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Industrial Chemistry and the Institute of Meat and Fat Industry. He was also a member of the Committee of Food Technology and Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences, a member of the Committee on Physical Chemistry of Surfaces of the Polish Academy of Sciences Branch in Kraków, of the Polish Chemical Society. In the years 1974-1975 he was the chairman of the Gdańsk Branch. In the years 1984-1988 he was the chairman of the Provincial National Council in Gdańsk.

Professor Włodzimierz Zwierzykowski promoted six doctors, one of whom obtained the degree of habilitated doctor, and two people the title of professor.

We will remember the Professor as a cheerful and kind man, characterized by high personal culture and professionalism in his work.
