Prof. dr hab. inż. Andrzej Chimiak
On 14 may 2023 died Professor Andrzej Chimiak, Professor Emeritus of the Gdańsk University of Technology. He was graduated of the Faculty of Chemistry at the Gdańsk University of Technology. Scientist, academic teacher, specialist in the field of organic chemistry.
Andrzej Chimiak was born on March 12, 1932 in Lviv. In 1950, He passed his final exams at the Secondary School in Sopot, and then began studies at the Faculty of Chemistry of the Gdańsk University of Technology, obtaining in 1954 first the title of chemical engineer, and then at the Warsaw University of Technology the title of master of chemical engineering. Subsequently, at the Faculty of Chemistry of the Gdańsk University of Technology, He defended his doctoral thesis, supervised by prof. Emil Taszner (1962) and habilitation (1971). He received the academic title of professor in 1978. In 1997 He retired. In 2014, He was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus of the Gdańsk University of Technology. He died on May 14, 2023.
Being a researcher at the Faculty of Chemistry of the Gdańsk University of Technology, He was successively: an assistant at the Department of Medicines Technology of the GUT (1956-1959); assistant, senior assistant, assistant professor and associate professor of the Department of General Chemistry of GUT (1959-1969). From 1968 He was a full-time associate professor, from 1978 an associate professor and from 1992 a full professor at the Department / Department of Organic Chemistry. During his work, He completed one-year scientific internships at the J. Rudinger Laboratory of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in Prague (1969-1970) and the J. Neilands Laboratory at the University of California in Berkeley, USA (1979-1980).
During his work at the Faculty of Chemistry, He was, among others, the Vice-Dean of the Faculty (1973-1975) and the Head of the Scientific Team of Organic Chemistry (1970-1994). Andrzej Chimiak promoted five doctors.
Andrzej Chimiak's scientific interests focused on the chemistry of amino acids and peptides, N-hydroxylamines, organic sulfur compounds and the biochemistry of siderophores.
