In the field of natural sciences, instrumental measurements are the entirely crucial methods of determination of the molecular structure of newly synthesized materials or fragments of biological systems. Such results are required by the research communities and editors of scientific journals. Within the Structural Research Laboratories we have concentrated a set of basic research techniques, providing knowledge about the structure of chemical compounds in solution and solid state. These are:
- NMR spectrometers
- Mass spectrometers
- Monocrystalline X-ray diffractometer
The task of these instruments, operated by qualified operators, is to provide a data set allowing to determine the three-dimensional structure of the chemical compound.
The SRL offer an innovative technique that allows for imaging not only molecules, but also living cells and studies on the interactions of relatively simple molecules with fragments of cellular structures. Within SRL we have a microscope laboratory equipped with:
- Fluorescent microscopes
In modern structural research, an indispensable technique is molecular modeling, which allows to determine the structures of macromolecules (especially proteins and their complexes) in silico. Molecular modeling allows to support experimental methods in the interpretation of results and to predict the structures of compounds for which the experiment is impossible or difficult to access. Therefore, SRL includes:
- Laboratory of molecular modeling
This laboratory uses professional molecular modeling software that allows to determine the structures of biopolymers as well as the nanostructures of complexes and inorganic surfaces.
As the most important objective of the Structural Research Laboratories we target the efficient use of the equipment for the high-quality scientific research and useful expertise for the economic environment. We would like to reach a large community of the researchers and practitioners, increase the possibilities of scientific development through the implementation of joint projects and raise the recognition of both the Faculty of Chemistry and the entire Gdańsk University of Technology in the its scientific and economic environment.
