Innovative Solutions for Thermal Energy Storage
One of the key challenges of modern energy is efficient energy storage. In an era of growing demand for renewable energy sources and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, searching for innovative solutions for the collection and use of thermal energy is becoming a priority for scientists around the world. A researcher from the Faculty of Chemistry at Gdańsk University of Technology is conducting research that can significantly contribute to the advancement of this field.
A research team led by Łukasz Piszczyk, PhD, DSc, Eng., professor at Gdańsk Tech, from the Department of Polymer Technology, is implementing a project entitled "Studies on the possibilities of implementing and processing phase change materials (PCM) in polyurethane materials", which received funding from the OPUS competition in the amount of PLN 1,541,452.
Thermal Energy Under Control
Latent heat storage presents a promising solution in the context of stabilizing access to thermal energy. Phase change materials (PCM) allow for effective storage and release of energy through phase transformations, such as melting and crystallization. Their integration into polyurethane structures opens up new possibilities of applications in thermal insulation and energy storage.
Modern Materials for a Sustainable Future
The primary goal of the research is the synthesis of new polyurethane composites capable of effectively storing thermal energy. Appropriate modification of the chemical structure of these materials and doping them with PCM in the form of micro- and nanocapsules will allow for obtaining highly functional composites with improved thermal properties.
The results of the project will contribute to expanding knowledge on new methods of energy storage and the possibilities of their implementation in modern energy systems. The outcomes of this research may have a significant impact on the development of technologies used in construction, transport and the energy industry.
OPUS Competition – Support for Innovative Research
The project carried out by Prof. Piszczyk's team received funding under the OPUS competition, which enables researchers at various stages of their careers to carry out ambitious scientific projects. Thanks to this support, it is possible not only to conduct basic research, but also to develop international cooperation and implement innovative technological solutions.
