From Waste to Resource. International ECONUT Project Conference at Gdańsk Tech
How can an environmental challenge be transformed into a valuable resource? How can organic waste originating from coastal areas contribute to sustainable agriculture, dune protection, and the development of a circular economy?
These questions will be at the heart of the international conference concluding the ECONUT project, which will take place on 17 June 2026 at Gdańsk University of Technology.
The conference will bring together researchers, representatives of public authorities, international organisations, local governments, and industry stakeholders interested in the sustainable use of natural resources and the implementation of solutions supporting the transition towards a circular economy.
The ECONUT project is implemented under the Interreg South Baltic Programme and focuses on developing methods for recovering nutrients from coastal biomass, particularly beach wrack – organic material naturally accumulating along Baltic Sea shorelines.
The conference programme will address topics including:
• nutrient recovery and recycling (nitrogen and phosphorus) within circular economy systems,
• the use of beach biomass for the production of fertilisers and soil amendments,
• the impact of beach wrack on coastal ecosystem functioning,
• dune protection and enhancing the resilience of coastal areas to climate change,
• environmental and economic assessment of proposed technologies,
• business models and implementation pathways for circular solutions at the regional level.
The event will feature experts representing the European Commission, Interreg South Baltic Programme partners, and research institutions from Poland, Sweden, Germany, Lithuania, and Denmark.
A key element of the conference will be the presentation of the ECONUT project results, including developed nutrient recovery technologies, solutions supporting coastal environmental protection, and recommendations for local authorities and businesses interested in implementing circular economy approaches.
The conference will provide a unique platform for knowledge exchange between academia, public administration, and industry, as well as for discussing the practical application of research outcomes in the sustainable development of the Baltic Sea region.
We warmly invite all those interested in circular economy solutions, environmental protection, sustainable agriculture, and innovative environmental technologies to participate in this event.
