On 1 - 2 July 2021, the Gdansk University of Technology (Gdańsk Tech) hosted the XLV Session of the Committee on Food and Nutrition Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences, organized by the Department of Chemistry, Technology and Biotechnology of Food (DChTBF) of the Faculty of Chemistry, in cooperation with the Gdańsk Branch of the Polish Society of Food Technologists. The session was a great opportunity to celebrate Jubilee of the 90th birthday anniversary of Professor Zdzisław E. Sikorski.

The Head of the DChTBF, on behalf of the academic community of the Faculty of Chemistry of Gdańsk Tech, including his colleagues from the Department, wished the Professor a happy birthday. The well-wishes were joined by former colleagues of Professor's team and representatives of various scientific institutions.

Professor Zdzisław E. Sikorski has been associated to the scientific community of Gdańsk since 1950, when he started his studies in Gdańsk Tech, first at the Agrotechnical Department and, after its dissolution, at the Department of Chemistry. In Gdańsk Tech he obtained the following degrees and scientific titles: B.S. (1954), M.S. (1956), Ph.D. (1961), D.Sc. (1965), associate professorship in technical sciences (1973) and full professorship (1980). From 1965 Professor Sikorski had held many responsible positions in Gdańsk Tech. He was the organizer and Head of the Department of Food Chemistry and Technology, served as Vice-Dean (1966-1969) and Dean (1973-1975 and 1978-1981) of the Faculty of Chemistry, he was the organizer and head of the diploma course on Food Preservation Technology at master's degree level, the course on Food Technology and Analysis at the engineering degree level, as well as one of the initiators of establishing biotechnology studies at the Faculty of Chemistry. Professor Sikorski also chaired the scientific council of the Sea Fisheries Institute in Gdynia. He was also the chairman of the Committee on Food Technology and Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences, an elected member of the Main Council of Science and Tertiary Education in Poland, and the member of the International Academy of Food Science and Technology. He also worked as researcher/professor in Ohio State University (Ohio, USA), Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (Hobart, Australia), Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (Auckland, New Zealand) and National Taiwan Ocean University in Keelung (Keelung, Taiwan). He gained industrial experience in breweries, fish, meat, and vegetable processing plants, and on a deep-sea fishing trawler.

Professor Sikorski is in excellent shape, which, as he maintains, he owes to his intense work and daily walks with his wife by the Bay of Gdańsk coast. He also actively participates in scientific life, which is quite exceptional. His activities in editing and publishing books are particularly admirable. He is the initiator, editor, and author of numerous academic textbooks on food chemistry and technology. He is also the editor and author of a series of books entitled Chemical and Functional Properties of Food Components published by the prestigious American publishing house CRC Press.

Once again, we would like wish the Professor all the best, good health and many days full of joy and satisfaction.
