Faculty of Chemistry Day at Gdańsk Tech – a Special Celebration of the 80th Anniversary

On 17 June 2025, the Faculty of Chemistry at Gdańsk University of Technology held a formal celebration as part of the 80th anniversary of the Faculty’s founding. For over eight decades of educational and scientific activity, the Faculty of Chemistry has educated generations of engineers and scientists, developed modern technologies, conducted pioneering research, and established strong collaborations with industry. We take pride in our history, achievements, and the individuals who have shaped—and continue to shape—our identity.
The event was hosted by Justyna Płotka-Wasylka, PhD, DSc, Eng., Professor at Gdańsk Tech and Vice-Dean for Research, who warmly welcomed the gathered guests. In her address, she reflected on the Faculty's rich history as well as its future, being shaped by successive generations of chemists.
Following her introduction, the Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry, Jacek Gębicki, PhD, DSc, Eng., Professor at Gdańsk Tech, officially opened the celebration. The ceremony was enriched by a performance from a quintet from the Zygmunt Noskowski Primary and Secondary School of Music in Gdynia. The young musicians deeply moved the audience and were called back for two encores.
The next item on the agenda was a long-anticipated lecture by the special guest—Professor Janusz Pawliszyn from the University of Waterloo, Canada. The host of the event introduced the Professor’s impressive scientific achievements, after which he delivered a presentation on the history and development of the Solid Phase Microextraction (SPME) technique and its key applications in contemporary analytical chemistry and in various scientific and industrial domains.
After the lecture, participants enjoyed a coffee break, followed by the most spectacular part of the event—explosive chemistry demonstrations, which elicited enthusiasm and smiles from the audience. The celebration concluded with a Faculty picnic filled with flavors, conversations, and relaxation to the sounds of instrumental music performed by the Duo Acoustic ensemble.
